A comparative analysis of moving average filter and Kalman filter for large diesel engine test cell back-pressure control

Diesel engine combustion releases many harmful components, thus there are continuous efforts into improving the efficiency of these engines and reducing gasses particulates to meet emission authorities targets. To develop sell new engine-related products, required run be audited in diesel test cells. A critical measurement for benchmark testing is exhaust back-pressure, which resultant flow from a product air fuel consumed. The back-pressure controlled by restricting using butterfly valve this pressure must set defined limits ensure compliance. Setting limit takes time consumes large volumes fuel, causes additional emissions. Therefore, feedback control solution regulate desirable. In current practice, moving average filter used on two commercial standard softwares – SGS CyFlex ® AVL Puma 2 Data Acquisition Control Systems provide useful signal control. Considering presence erratic noise associated with measurement, Kalman Filter tunable uncertainty process gains also considered. By modifying script PUMA , implemented first cells comparative analysis between performance filters provided. Both effectively reduce system, showing closer tracking desired system response. This demonstrates potential applying improved that could consumption during testing, thereby makes more economical environment friendly. results presented work will open up opportunities filtering method’s various functions, have broader impact industrial practice.
